Statutory Assessments
- Reception Baseline Assessment (Entry to Reception): A short, interactive check within the first six weeks to measure initial progress in language and maths.
- Year 1 Phonics Screening Check (June): Assesses decoding ability by having children read 40 words, checking their reading development. If a child does not pass the Phonics Check in Year 1, they will retake it in Year 2.
- Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (June): An online, 25-question test on times tables up to 12x12
- Key Stage 2 SATs (Year 6 - May): Formal, timed tests in Reading, Maths, and Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling (SPaG). These determine if a child is working at, below, or above the expected standard. Writing is also formally assessed but is not a formal test, but a collection of evidence over time.
The purpose of these tests is to help teachers identify what a child has learned and retained before exploring whether further extra support is required. KS2 SATS tests are marked externally, with results returned to schools in July. Children who achieve a scaled score of 100+ means that they are meeting the expected standard for their age and stage.
Teacher judgments are also a crucial part of tracking how well a child is doing in school. At Shipton Bellinger Primary School, our staff complete termly assessments which are shared with parents as part of our Half-Termly Progress Reviews and also Parents' Evening.
